A narrow shopfront off a Fitzroy laneway

Isaac Wren served his apprenticeship at a Brunswick Street studio that has since closed, learning fine line and blackwork from an owner who cared more about a clean stencil and a sealed cartridge than about how fast the chair turned over. When that lease ended in 2015, Isaac took a narrow shopfront off a laneway two streets back from Brunswick Street and opened Blackbird on his own, doing every tattoo himself out of one room with one chair and a single lamp.

For the first four years it was tattoo work only. Consultations happened at a small table under that lamp, with reference books Isaac had collected from Rose Street op shops stacked along one wall. A framed sheet of antique botanical illustration plates went up in the front alcove in the first month, more to fill the wall than to make a statement, and it is still there, still the first thing most clients photograph on their way to the chair.

The turning point came in 2019. A regular client asked whether Blackbird could also do her second lobe piercing, since she trusted the studio's process more than the chain jewellery counter she had used for her first. Isaac did not know piercing and said so rather than guess, and spent that winter looking for someone who did it properly. Theo Sable had been piercing at a St Kilda studio for four years and wanted to build a proper consultation-led piercing room rather than a walk-up counter. He joined that year, fitted out the second room with better light and a mirror, and brought implant-grade titanium and gold into the studio for the first time.

The rest of the team came together slowly rather than all at once. Priya Doshi joined in 2020 to take on the colour realism and cover-up work Isaac's fine line hand was not suited to, and now leads most of that side of the bookings. Grace Okafor took over the front desk in 2022 and built the deposit and rebooking system that keeps the custom design queue honest, since before that it ran off a paper diary and Isaac's memory.

Blackbird's premises are registered with the City of Yarra for skin penetration procedures, and every needle, cartridge or piercing needle is sealed until it is opened in front of the client using it. That is not a point of difference we advertise loudly, because every studio worth using should already be doing it. What we do talk about is the consultation: a proper conversation about the design or the placement before anything is booked in, so nobody sits down for a tattoo they only half chose.
